7th grade Humanities - 9 weeks rotational
Humanities students study how people have told stories and communicated through out history. We reasearch, share, and build in this hands-on class. The 9 weeks go VERY quickly! The students start out in the caves at Lascaux, progress through ancient Egypt, and end up in the Middle Ages or the Renaissance.
8th grade Art - 9 weeks rotational
This is a transitional class between the elementary art classes and the high school classes. The students work with the elements and principles of design, manipulation of space, exploration of media, and imagery.
.....................................................................
Each class listed below, is aimed toward the abilities of the individual student.
Any of the high school levels of Art can fulfill the current college entrance requirements for the humanities or languages.
.....................................................................
Art I - open to all high school students.
Art I is a general survey class which gives the student a basic background in 2D and 3D design. The first semester exclusively deals with two-dimensional problems and an introduction to a variety of drawing media. The second semester is three-dimensional design and gives the students the fundamentals of pottery and sculpture.
Art II - open to high school students who have successfully completed Art I.
Art II is a more concentrated introduction to drawing, painting, and three-dimensional media. The emphasis is on increasing skills and gaining more of an understanding about the nature of art. The student will deal with basic art theories and art history.
Art III and Art IV - open to high school students who have successfully completed Art I, II, (and III). A minimum of a B- grade in the previous level art class or the permission of the instructor is required.
Art III and IV are for the SERIOUS art student only. It is an in depth study of types and styles of art. The student will work independently of other students and is expected to do research into areas of individual interest each quarter. The students also work on developing critical thinking skills in evaluation of their work and in aesthetics of art overall.
Portfolio Prep - This is a college bound class that is taken along with Art III and/or Art IV as a seperate class. The same prerequistes exist as with Art III and Art IV.
Portfolio Preparation is for the student who plans on continuing in Art at the college level or in an Art school setting. The emphasis of these classes will be determined by the needs of the individual student to present a complete two and three dimensional portfolio in an effort to be accepted into post-high school institutions and to obtain funding such as scholarships. Additional time will be spent on techniques of presentation. We also explore schoools appropriate to the student's interests.
Independent Study - Is for advanced level students who due to scheduling problems can not fit into a scheduled time slot.
This is a similar curriculum as Art III and IV. Independent Study is also for the advanced Art student who wants additional study time in a different avenue than what they are working on in III or IV.
Photography I and II - all high schools students who have had a minimum of Art I previously so that we have a "common vocabulary".
We will address 35mm film, "click and shoot" digital as well as SLR (single-lens reflex) film and digital. The courses will cover how photography works, the history and mechanics of the camera, differences between snap-shots and photography. The students will be involved in problem solving in an increasingly visual world, composition, critical thinking and presentation. We will also explore digital manipulation of images through Photoshop. The ethical use and decision making to create more responsible consumers will be stressed.
